Posted on 18:50 by Unknown
Autism Lights #240 are Dave and Mindy Rice.

Dave and Mindy Rice are from Las Vegas, Nevada. Dave Rice is currently the head coach of the men's basketball team at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dave and Mindy have two boys and their 9 year old son Dillon has autism. In response to the personal way in which autism has touched their lives they established the Dave Rice Foundation on February 9, 2012 (Source). Dave and Mindy Rice are Autism Lights for their work to make a difference for autism as parents and as creators of an autism foundation.

D.J. Allen, Sr., the Associate Athletic Director at UNLV said, "Anyone who has ever been involved in the life of a special needs child at any level understands the amount of love, dedication and sacrifice that goes into that child to maximize his or her potential. What Dave and Mindy have decided to do is personal. They're not doing this for sympathy. They're doing it because it's the right thing to do (Source)."

Education: Dave Rice graduated from UNLV in 1991 with a B.A. and 1993 with an MBA.

UNLV Basketball: Dave Rice was a member of the UNLV Men's Basketball team during the 1989-1990 season, when UNLV won the National Championship. According to the Dave Rice Foundation website they are a "non-profit, tax exempt organization dedicated to the education and support of health initiatives including developmental disorders such as Autism, and other charitable causes. The Dave Rice Foundation will be partnering with the UNLV Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Dave Rice said, "The difficulty with autism is that we would go to the doctor and he would ask us what we thought. And I thought, 'Aren't you the doctor?' That was the frustrating part. And with this foundation, the education and awareness will just benefit everybody (Source)."

Fundraising Events:  On May 4, 2012, the foundation held "An Evening with Dave Rice" as it's first fundraiser (Source). On November 12, 2012, the Dave Rice Foundation held a fundraiser with the support of restaurants in Las Vegas (Source).

Buddy Matthews

Posted on 18:47 by Unknown
Autism Light #233 is Buddy Matthews.

John R. "Buddy" Matthews was from Economy, Pennsylvania. Buddy Matthews died tragically on August 22, 2009, from injuries resulting from a motorcycle accident. He was a self-employed home contractor who owned Matthews Home Improvements. Buddy Matthews left behind his wife Tricia, daughter Alyson, and a son Joel who has autism.  His obituary may be read at the Times Online.

Buddy Matthews is being made an Autism Light posthumously because he was the co-founder of the Eric Barto Memorial Foundation for Autism.  Buddy and his wife Tricia created the foundation to honor the memory of their friend and to help children with autism, like their son Joel, to attend YMCA programs. After his death the motorcycle run was renamed the Buddy Matthews Memorial Ride and Benefit for Autism. Linda Voshall, Buddy's mother organizes the event.

The following is a video of the Buddy Matthews Memorial Ride in 2011.

The 2nd Annual Ride was held on August 11, 2012. Be sure and mark your calendars for August 10, 2013 when the 3rd Annual Ride will be held. 55 motorcyclists participated in 2012, but the weather conditions were a factor. An event organizer Danny Kehoe said, "Buddy’s the one who started this whole thing because his son Joel has autism (Source)."

The SewickleyPatch website reported:
After Buddy Matthews’ death, the [Eric Barto] event was changed in his name and continues to benefit kids with autism. Proceeds from T-shirt sales, raffles, the silent auction, and other parts of the event go to the Sewickley Valley YMCA to benefit families and kids with autism (Source).
Social Media: For more information you can "Like" the Buddy Matthews Memorial Ride on Facebook.

Children with autism are being helped from the Buddy Matthews Memorial Ride. Buddy Matthews has a legacy as an Autism Light and it shines through this event as well as his unending love for his son Joel. May we never take life for granted and realize that every day is precious as we remember Buddy Matthews today. Autism Light will also honor Buddy Matthews by placing his name today on the Autism Light Memorial Roll.

Sevenly

Posted on 04:22 by Unknown
Autism Light #219 is Sevenly.

Sevenly is a business in Fullerton, California that, since they launched on June 14, 2011, have been helping one cause each week of the year by giving to them a portion of the sales of their products that week.  Sevenly partnered with Autism Speaks the week of July 24-30, 2012. Sevenly is an Autism Light for supporting Autism Speaks and raising awareness for autism in social media.

Sevenly describes their business in the following way:
Sevenly is a weekly cause activation platform. Some have even called us a cause crowdfunding platform. Every week (7 days) we partner with a new non-profit organization, we create unique art and limited edition products that we sell exclusively on our website Sevenly.org for 7 days. For every product sold, we give that week’s non-profit organization $7. For example, if we sold 1,000 products, Sevenly would donate $7,000 (Source).
In their Frequently Asked Questions they describe their driving force as a "desire is to move a generation toward generosity and an intentional love for others" and that their purpose is driven from a passage in the Bible--Matthew 22:36-40. (Source).

Sevenly's support of Autism Speaks will be used to provide communiation therapy to a child affected by autism. Almost $150,000 has been raised through Sevenly's support of Autism Speaks. Thanks to donors providing a triple match to the standard $7.00 donated by Sevenly, the full $21 of the sale price of the shirts went to Autism Speaks for most of the week. An update will be added to this post when the final donation totals are in at the end of the week's campaign.

The following is the YouTube video that Sevenly did to promote autism and their partnership with Autism Speaks for their assigned week in July, 2012.

Sevenly provides a description of the meaning of their shirt design and connects it with the cause being supported. Here is Sevenly's description of their autism shirt.

The illustration style of the lion is meant to represent power and strength. The effect of autism on individuals suffering from the disorder as well as people connected to it such as parents and siblings can be exhausting. The lion represents power and strength so instead of focusing on the issues of people affected by autism we decided to focus on the strength and courage of these individuals. These are people who are extremely determined, talented and courage to say the least. They are not weak, or broken and incapable — We are inspired by their strength and want to encourage them to stay strong (Source).
One of the keys to the success of Sevenly is that they have a dedicated and hip social media program that compliments their marketing efforts. Each week the designated cause benefits from their social media blitz. Here is one of the Tweets that came from Sevenly's Twitter account.
Do not worry about why problems exist in the world -- just respond to people's needs. #ServeOthers

Elgina Byrd

Posted on 07:11 by Unknown
Autism Light #210 is Elgina Byrd.

Elgina Byrd was an autism mother from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania whose son Shawn Gauthney, Jr. has autism. Elgina Byrd died on July 4, 2012 from a stroke. She was 38 years old. Autism Light is designating Elgina Byrd an Autism Light posthumously because of her devotion as an autism mother and for her autism fundraising efforts. Elgina Byrd will also be added today to the Autism Light Memorial Roll.

John F. Morrison explained Elgina Byrd's relationship with her son Shawn this way:
Shawn, now 12, got the full impact of Elgina's care and love. She took him to the many activities for autistic children offered by the Variety Club. She took him skating, bowling and on trips to Wildwood. With Variety Club, there was camping and visits to aquariums and zoos, and many events to stimulate Shawn's mind and help him lead as normal a life as possible (Source).
In addition to being an autism mother to Shawn, Elgina Byrd worked for AlliedBarton Security Services. She also found time to participate in Autism Speaks walks in Philadelphia and raise funds for the national autism charity.

Elgina's daughter Deraj Pugh said about her mother, "She was very hardworking. She was very devoted as a mother. She was highly intelligent and was always willing to sacrifice herself for others. But she was also very funny, with a bubbly personality (Source)."

Funeral Arrangements: The funeral for Elgina Byrd will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia. Visitation will take place starting at 10 a.m. prior to the service and Burial will take place at Fernwood Cemetery.

The autism community has lost a hero. Elgina Byrd didn't need to be a celebrity or famous name to be one of those dedicated mothers for autism whose short life causes us to ask, "If this were my last day on earth, what would I do for autism?" Our thoughts are with Shawn Gauthney, Jr., Deraj Pugh and all the family of Elgina Byrd at this time. May her untimely death remind us to treasure all of our unknown days to serve and fight for autism.

The writer of this post learned about Elgina Byrd's Autism Light through a touching tribute that John F. Morrison wrote.  For a photo of Elgina Byrd and more information on her life read John F. Morrison's complete obituary on her for Philly.com at http://www.philly.com/philly/obituaries/162164765.html.

Shinji Tejima

Posted on 03:58 by Unknown
Autism Light #182 is Shinji Tejima.

Shinji Tejima is from Fukuoka, Japan. He works at the Showa Studio Automobile Repair Shop. Shinji built a very expensive motorcycle that is a replica of a famed motorcycle that was featured in the 1988 Japanese animated science-fiction movie Akira. Rather than let it sit safe in his garage, he is riding it across the country of Japan to raise funds for a Japanese autism support group called the Bokura Company. Shinji Tejima is an Autism Light for riding this special bike across Japan for autism awareness and to raise funds for an autism charity.

Shinji Tejima's bike is the only one of its kind officially recognized by Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo and it took seven years and cost $121,000 U.S. funds to build (Source). Here is a video of Shinji Tejima on his motorcycle trip that includes stops in Osaka, Nagoya, and on Shodo Island in Japan. Other videos can be seen on a YouTube Channel dedicated to the project.

Niamh Cadogan

Posted on 10:14 by Unknown
Autism Light #172 is Niamh Cadogan.

We so often focus on parents of those with autism that we may forget the special bond that exists with sibilings. Niamh Cadogan has a younger brother Stephen who has autism. Her relationship with her beloved brother inspired Niamh as she continued to lead an autism project during a serious illness.

Niamh Cadogan, from West Cork in Ireland, was born on June 22, 1994 and passed away on March 19, 2012 at the age of 17, from Leukemia. Niamh Cadogan is being named an Autism Light posthumously for the autism project she did to help children with autism obtain an iPod Touch with the Grace App on it. Niamh Cadogan will also be added to the Autism Light Memorial Roll today. The name "Niamh" is an Irish name that means "bright", or "radiant" and it's a fitting description for today's Autism Light.

Niamh with her friends Lisa and Liam
Niamh with her brother Stephen
Niamh Cadogan was the leader of a Young Social Innovators project called Amazing Grace: Improving the Lives of Children with Autism in Skibbereen. The 18 month project involved raising funds by recycling mobile phones in order to purchase an iPod Touch with the Grace App installed on it for children with autism. Every child in the autism unit programs at the St. Patrick's Boy's National School and at Rossa College became the beneficiaries of Niamh Cadogan's vision and dedication to serve.

Tributes were made to Niamh Cadogan from two prominent members of the autism community.
  • Lisa Domican, the developer of the Grace App, said, "She got the entire school behind her and made it happen. She appreciated and adored her brother, and realised that it made her a better person (Source)."
  • Kevin Whelen, the chief executive of Irish Autism Action said, "There are children with autism around the country who are now communicating with their parents thanks to Niamh (Source)."
The following are articles on the legacy of Niamh Cadogan
  • Teenage Autism Crusader Leaves Powerful Legacy
  • Tributes Paid to Young Social Innovator
You can also read about Niamh Cadogan's project and her battle with Leukemia in an online copy of a previous edition of the Young Social Innovators Newsletter.

Social Media: The Amazing Grace project has a Facebook page too for further information on it.

We honor the life and memory of Niamh Cadogan and hope that her work will inspire other young people who have siblings with autism to change the world for autism. Because of their youth and generational bond, siblings have a unique opportunity to make a difference over the long term for autism. Certainly Niamh Cadogan's legacy won't be forgotten as dozens of students are communicating with their parents because of the gift of an iPod Touch with the Grace App on it.

Jim Weiss

Autism Light #143 is Jim Weiss.

We all have a story to tell. People with autism have amazing stories inside them, but they sometimes need some extra help to be able to share them with the world. Today's Autism Light is a world famous storyteller who is hosting a fundraiser to help a family struggling with autism to write a new and wonderful story for their daughter.

Jim Weiss is from Charlottesville, Virginia. He has over 25 years experience as a children's storyteller and has received international acclaim. Tomorrow on Saturday, February 4, 2012, he will be in Dedham, Maine to host a fundraiser to help with the cost of autism therapy for a girl named Emma Stanley. Jim Weiss is an Autism Light for the way he is helping Emma's family raise funds to be able to write a beautiful next chapter in Emma's story.

Emma Stanley
Fundraiser for Emma Stanley:  Jim Weiss is hosting a fundraiser to help defray some of the high costs of autism therapy for Emma Stanley on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at The Lucerne Inn in Dedham, Maine. A website at http://storiesforemma.weebly.com/. has been created that explains all the details about the fundraiser. There is also a website called "Emma's Dreams" in which you can follow Emma's story and journey with autism. One of the therapies they are seeking to raise funds for on Emma's behalf is the Son-Rise Program from the Autism Treatment Center of America.

Emma's mother, Ellen Stanley told Autism Light that Jim Weiss is a legend in their home and they listen to him all the time. Ellen conveyed her utmost gratitude to Jim Weiss for helping her family in this way. She said,
For a complete stranger, a world renowned Storyteller to offer to do a fundraiser for us, well, it gives us hope. We feel like someone cares. It gives us the strength to keep on trying.
Great Hall Productions: Jim Weiss and his wife Randy started Great Hall Productions in 1989 "to bring to life for children the greatest stories from classic literature and history (Source)." Great Hall Productions has an excellent website at www.greathall.com with a variety of information about Jim Weiss' life and illustrious career as a Storyteller.

According to his website, "Jim travels extensively throughout The United States, giving live performances at stores, libraries, schools and community events. He has hosted and starred in a PBS television pilot that won a Northern California Emmy for "Best Children's Show," and has even performed at The White House Annual Easter Event."

However, if you are not able to hear Jim Weiss in person you can order one of his many recordings at this website. Here is a video of Jim Weiss being interviewed about the art of storytelling as part of a Home School Spotlight.

Social Media: You can follow the stories of Jim Weiss on his Facebook page.
Wikipedia: Jim Weiss also has a Wikipedia page.

The Autism Light blog is a growing collection of stories that each take diverse paths to meet in some way at the intersection of autism and hope. Special thanks to Jim Weiss for showing us the value of our story in life. Jim Weiss is truly an Autism Light for the help he is providing the Stanley family and little Emma as they journey with autism.

Guilana Ricchiuti

Posted on 03:59 by Unknown
Autism Light #142 is Guilana Ricchiuti.

Imagine someone giving up their birthday gifts and asking people instead to donate to an autism charity. That would be a wonderful thing for someone to do and it is pretty amazing when the person who actually did this is just 5 years old? Today we journey to Poland, Ohio, where 5 year old Guilana Ricchiuti is named an Autism Light for giving her birthday gifts to an autism charity dear to her heart.

In lieu of presents and gifts at her party, Guilana Ricchiuti asked her family and friends to give money for The Rich Center for Autism on her 5th birthday. The Rich Center for Autism was chosen because Guilana's Grandmother Phyllis Ricchiuti was one of the charities co-founders. Almost $400 was raised for the Rich Center for Autism thanks to Guilana's birthday sacrifice. Here is a news story on this special gift from Guilana Ricchiuti.

The Rich Center for Autism was started in 2005 and it provides many resources and services to the autism community in Ohio through its partnership with Youngstown State University. According to its website, "The primary mission of the Rich Center for Autism is to improve the lives of individuals with autism through the creation, use and enhancement of innovative educational programs specifically designed to enhance the individuals' opportunities to achieve their full potentials. The Rich Center was named in honor of Paula and Anthony Rich who died in a tragic plane crash in 1994 near Pittsburgh.

For more information on Giuliana Ricchiuti's gift see these news stories that appeared in the media.

Autism Light #139 is Candice Hause.

Candice Hause is a senior at Shade-Central City High School in Cairnbrook, Pennsylvania. She has two siblings with autism, Leah age 5, and Blake age 4 (see photo above).  Candice's senior project will improve life for those with autism in two areas. The money raised will be split for a joint project to remodel a sensory room used by students with autism and to support an after school horseback therapy program. Candice Hause is an Autism Light because of her selection of a senior project that will benefit children who have autism, like her siblings.

Candice Hause said this to Autism Light about her project:
The reason I chose Autism for my senior project is because I realize how important it is to be diagnosed as soon as possible and to get the help needed to have the best outcome for the person with Autism.
Candice Hause shared with Autism Light that she wants to help parents who might be unaware their child has autism, when she sees a situation in public. "I always want to say something, but fear it is not my place or what the reaction would be," said she said. This Senior project will help Candice make a difference without saying anything.  Here is the two sides of the project.

Sensory Room: Candice Hause plans to upgrade a school sensory room for students with special needs. It is not just used for autism. She indicated that, "Each one is different, so we'd like to add as many things as possible to help as many people as we can (Source)."

Horseback Therapy: The horseback riding therapy will be conducted by Best of Friends, a volunteer non-profit group. You can visit their website at http://best-of-friends.org to find out about the work of their organization. The value of horseback therapy is expressed a this poem at the Saddle Scoop website by John Anthony Davies.

Candice Hause is hoping to raise $5,000 for her project.  If you would like to contribute and help this Autism Light reach her goal to see it to completion then please email chause93@verizon.net for more information. Those who donate will receive a special handcrafted wooden memorablia made by Terry Schaffer, the Grandfather of Candice and her siblings. For more information on Candice Hause' senior project read the article published by the Hartford Courant.

Special thanks to Candice Hause for making autism her senior project. Candice is an example of the positive things a high school senior can do to help brighten the world of those with autism. If you liked this post you may wish to read other Autism Light posts about siblings of people with autism. Darlene Borre

Posted on 03:31 by Unknown
Autism Light #77 is Darlene Borre.

Darlene Borre is from Manchester, Connecticut. Her son Ben is in 4th grade and has autism. Darlene Borre is a former attorney and presently works from home as a claims adjuster. Darlene Borre is the co-founder of All Seasons Community (All Seasons Academy), a nonprofit with the mission to build capacity to be able to supply housing needs for adults with autism in the West Hartford, Connecticut area. Darlene Borre is an Autism Light because of her fundraising efforts on behalf of families with autism.

Motivated by her own experiences as a mother of a son with autism, Darlene's immediate goal for All Seasons Community is to raise funds to give free 'sensory home makeovers' for families with children with autism.  Darlene Borre wrote this about her fundraising passion:
I have a job, so if we have to get an indoor swing, I'll get an indoor swing. But not everyone can afford it, or even know that they need it (Source).
On Saturday, October 29, 2011, All Seasons Community, will hold its first Harvest fundraiser to raise funds for these 'sensory home makeovers'. It will be held at the following location.

Zachs Community Room at University of Connecticut's School of Social Work
179 Asylum Avenue
West Hartford, Connecticut

The event will be a catered meal from 6 to 9 p.m. and will include a Silent Auction. Admission is only $20. If you are in the West Hartford, Connecticut area please consider participating in this event.

If you would like to nominate a family for the home makeover send their name to info@allseasonacademy.org. Makeovers may include equipment such as swings or weighted blankets as well as home renovations such as painting walls. Marie Mancini and Melissa Broxton, occupational therapists with Advanced Therapy Solutions in Wethersfield, Connecticut, have volunteered to do free at-home consultations with this project.

More information on Darlene Bore and her fundraising efforts can be found at the following links.

Thank you Darlene Borre for being an Autism Light and raising money for 'sensory home makeovers'. You are truly representative of a group of parents taking it upon themselves to raise money to assist other parents, who have children with autism but do not have the financial resources to be able to afford all of autism's tremendous costs.

Christian Mast

Posted on 04:06 by Unknown
Autism Light #26 is Christian Mast.

11 year old Christian Mast is from Upstate New York. Christian has autism and he spreads light to the autism community by being an author, fundraiser, and autism advocate. Christian also is an autism sibling as his brother Carter has autism. Christian Mast is an Autism Light because he is making a practical difference in his community by being an autism advocate, partnering with causes such as the Colgate Women's Ice Hockey Team's Autism Awareness project. In addition, he is a fundraiser who is currently working on a project to benefit Autism Speaks.

Colgate Women's Ice Hockey Team: Christian enjoys both playing hockey himself and watching great hockey. He is a super fan of the Colgate Women's Ice Hockey Team and helped designed the uniforms they will wear to kickoff their 2nd Annual Autism Awareness project the first weekend of February, 2012. Head Coach Scott Wiley said this about Christian:
Christian has become a part of the Colgate women's hockey family over the past year. He is an extremely talented, caring and inspiring individual and we are excited to give him an opportunity to show his creativity through designing this year's autism awareness jersey (Source).
For more information on the the hockey team visit their Autism Light post about their being designated Autism Lights #80. A news story on Christian Mast was written by Colgate University and a video of Christian talking about designing uniforms for the project is included here.

Fundraising for Autism Dog: Christian Mast seems to have a special gift for creative fundraising. A past fundraising venture came in 2009 when Christian authored a 24 page children's book called "Attack of the Killer Dinosaur Frogs", which helped raise some of the money needed for his family's acquisition of a Four Paws For Ability Dog, a Golden Retriever named Jetta. Christian's brother Carter also has autism.

Fundraising for Autism Speaks: Christian is actively involved in fundraising for his local chapter of Autism Speaks, including a walk for autism, selling toys, and running a lemonade stand. He is currently working on a goal of selling puzzle pieces to raise $1 Million dollars for Autism Speaks. He has created a Facebook page called "A Million Pieces for Autism" to help spread the word about his project and also to raise awareness for autism. He has over 500 likes of the Facebook page as of January 30, 2012.

The project is gaining energy. Jeanne Sager wrote an article on Christian Mast at The Stir of Cafemom.com.   Also, the blog Developmental Disabilities in the News featured a post on how through this fundraising Christian is forming social relationships and breaking myths about how people with autism are supposed to act. If everyone who hears of this will give just $1.00, $1 million can be secured as the porject goes "viral" through the widespread reach of social media like Facebook and blogs on the Internet.

Want to support Christian's cause?
Make checks out to Autism Speaks and send to:
Autism Speaks
10 Orchard Terrace
Sodus, NY  14551.

Donations can also be made via Paypal under the email address mommyofautism@gmail.com. All it takes is $1 to purchase a puzzle piece!  Autism Light made a donation and decided the fastest way to donate was through Paypal. You can follow Christian's fundraising progress at anytime by viewing his Autism Speaks Donation Page.

Special thanks to Christian Mast for being an Autism Light! His efforts are an inspiration to the autism community. Something tells us this Autism Light is just beginning to make a big mark for the cause of autism.
